It probably took me about five rounds of watching and re-watching the first three episodes of This Is Us to finally get hooked on the story; normally I would just stop trying after the first couple of times and give up, but something about the way my sister loved it made me stick around until I finally got deep enough on the story to understand what all the hype was about, and believe me, if you haven't watched it yet, you're really missing out on something great and unique, that manages to perfectly touch every emotion, feeling and spot.
Talking about This Is Us seemed like the perfect topic for the first Popcorn Review recommendation since it's last chapter has just aired last week and our time with the Pearson family is sadly coming to an end.
This amazing series is so unique thanks to how simple and close to reality it is. You don't escape to another world or get to meet magical creatures, there's no extreme violence and nothing mysterious, it's just life itself. A family's story told as if you were comfortably catching up with a loved one after a long time, with a perfect non-linear way of going back and forward between different stages of the past and the present, seamlessly. Touching everyday issues that are as small as a parents quarrel and as big as alcoholism, adoption and race. Every character is so compelling and complex, with a personal story that at some point will make you love them, no matter how different from you they are; and as a cherry on top, a soundtrack carefully curated that adds a new layer to the perfect storytelling developed by the writers.
At times, it even becomes therapeutic, and you can also see the character development and reasoning with such detail that learning everything that's behind every reaction and behavior makes you understand and appreciate human interactions in a deeper level, and invites you to reflect and analyze on your own ways of being, and your loved ones'.
For me, the most valuable thing about the complete series is the characters' dialogues and monologues, I can't wait to finish the last season and then rewatch it comfortably with a notebook and pen beside me to write down every piece of knowledge that they give away that can be useful for many situations in everyone's life, after all, as I mentioned before, the magic relies on how human it is. The psychological research behind it is something that interests me profoundly and was without a doubt, done thoroughly.
For me there's no greater love story out there than the one between Jack and Rebecca, having Mandy Moore and Milo Ventimiglia was just the perfect cast. It's like their whole careers were setting them up and preparing them for this timeless roles that I know will last as a classic for many years to come.
I can't wait to find out everything that this final chapter has in store for us, and discover if the closing of this story is as I picture it will be. But I can assure you you'll be finding quotes and inspired pieces during the time it's got left on-air.
My favorite chapter has always been Randall, though I can find bits of myself almost in every singe one ... if you are as hooked as I am let me know on the comments below which character is your favorite!
So now you know, This Is Us must be added to everyone's watchlist and right now is a perfect time to begin, so by the time you reach the final season, it will have aired already. You can find it streaming in Amazon Prime, Hulu, Apple TV and Star+.
